Around 44% of American children spend over four hours in front of a screen, which shows parents need creative ways to bring them outdoors.
Enjoying different water activities is a great way to bond with your little one while they soak up valuable vitamin D. But if you’re new to this, it can feel overwhelming knowing where to start. Perhaps you’re currently struggling to brainstorm ideas and you’re looking for inspiration.
Sounds like you? Don’t worry; we’ve got your back. Here are six water activities for kids to check out.
1. Make a Water Balloon Piñata
One of the top water activities for elementary students is to create a water balloon piñata. Simply fill large balloons with liquid and hang them on your clothesline. Give your kids each a stick and the win who bursts the piñata wins.

3. Make Your Own Sprinkler
Still brainstorming fun water activities to do at home? Then, create your sprinkler with your little one.
To do this, grab a plastic bottle and poke a line of holes for the water to burst through. Next, attach it to a hose with duct tape and you’re good to go! Or, if you already have one, turn it on for the kids to enjoy.
4. Toss Water Balloons Using Towels
Out of all the water activities for kindergarten, this is our favorite. Prepare a pile of water balloons and divide the kids into teams. The goal is to snap the balloon back and forth using a towel and when a team drops it, they get wet!
5. Play Dodgeball With Wet Sponges
Although it’s not strictly considered water sports for kids, this is a fun take on dodgeball. You’ll need a sponge for each player and two buckets of water. Keep the container on opposite sides of the yard and place the sponges lined up in the center for the kids to grab.
When a player is hit by a wet sponge, they’re out, so put on a timer for two minutes and see which team gets eliminated first.
6. Have a Water Balloon Scavenger Hunt
Fill water balloons and hide them around your yard for kids to find. The goal is whoever finds the most first wins. And, to make it extra entertaining, you could finish the game with a water balloon fight.
